Supporting the New England Aquarium's mission and the Development Department's fundraising goals, the Director of Annual Giving & Membership is responsible for leading oversight, strategy, and execution of annual giving and membership program to achieve increasing revenue goals and to build a pipeline of donors with lifetime value.

The Director is responsible for managing the staff and operations of the annual giving and membership team. This position as works with colleagues across the organization to leverage audience-related data to drive decision-making and develop a detailed strategy for program growth, including the implementation of innovation segmentation strategies, renewals, and acquisitions, crafting communications in collaboration with the marketing department, and organizing all programs and activities related to annual giving and membership societies.

This position reports to the Vice President of Development and serves as a member of the development leadership team. Further, the Director will serve as key contributor advocating for a culture of philanthropy across the Aquarium that supports the best interests of the organization as well as the donors.

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The general schedule will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with some flexibility based on the daily business needs. Candidates should be able to attend occasional events outside of business hours, such as member events. This position has a hybrid schedule, working some days on-site and some days remotely. Remote days are only available for residents of MA, RI, NH, ME, NY and VT.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and execute a data-driven, comprehensive, multi-year plan that includes revenue goals for membership and annual giving to meet overall institutional revenue objectives and to build a broad pipeline of donors.
  • Lead the team responsible for the management of annual giving and membership renewals, acquisitions, and communications including appeals and e-appeals, e-newsletters, and invitations.
  • Implement effective ways to acquire new, renew lapsed, and upgrade current members, including society members, using a host of direct marketing strategies, onsite sales, and other promotions. This includes considering new categories, benefits and offers. Manage a modeling and segmentation program to achieve maximum giving and engagement to build the donor pipeline.
  • Maintain and enhance a benefits package that retains the membership base, ensures constituency loyalty, and engages individuals in the organization's mission.
  • Oversee market research and survey programs to enhance donor and member audience growth and engagement. Promote opportunities for member/donor feedback to ensure ongoing high valuation of support.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and donor relations department on the development of annual fund and membership marketing campaigns.
  • Develop annual and long‐term revenue and cost projections for annual giving and provide senior management with analysis and reports based on department's progress towards meeting predetermined goals.
  • Solicit and manage all vendors related to annual giving and membership and manage and negotiate contracts.
  • Participate in cross-organizational coordinating committees for operations, scheduling, exhibitions, marketing content and major gifts.
  • Work with Development Department staff to ensure a logical continuum of benefits for members and donors at all levels and identify prospects from within membership base for other development programs.
  • Conduct performance benchmarking with peer organizations and best‐in‐class benchmarking across industries to identify practices that may be employed by New England Aquarium.
  • Conduct other job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 7 years development experience, including demonstrated success in annual fund and/or membership fundraising.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience managing staff.
  • Market research, analysis, and data modeling experience are essential.
  • Experience preparing timely, accurate, and comprehensive analytical reports and presentations is required.
  • Experience building multiyear plans and revenue goals required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication as well as analytical skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing data driven strategies and results oriented retention and engagement strategies.
  • Strategic planning and tactical execution experience that resulted in achievement of goals.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write clearly and persuasively and to generate excitement about the aquarium's work.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships across an organization and use common sense techniques in solving complex and logical problems.
  • Experience managing a staff; the ability to think strategically while remaining focused on the detail‐oriented work and follow‐through required by the position.
  • Event planning experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required; knowledge of The Raiser's Edge and Luminate are preferred.
  • An awareness and interest in the conservation of aquatic environments and their inhabitants.
