Reporting to, and working closely with, the Director of Donor Relations, the Senior Stewardship Officer is responsible for developing the strategy for, and execution of, Development-related donor communications including a robust donor stewardship program. This highly collaborative position works closely with development colleagues in Individual and Institutional Giving, Membership, and Development Operations as well as colleagues across the organization, most directly with our partners in Marketing, on writing content for, and managing projects related to, Development collateral including, but not limited to: correspondence, impact reports, stewardship plans, and web content.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Oversees and manages all Development-related projects with our partners in Marketing including, but not limited to: invitation production, web content, Impact & Annual Reports.
  2.  Directs the gift acknowledgement process working closely with the Development Operations team to ensure timely and effective acknowledgment of all individual and major gifts, including tax receipts, phone calls & written letters for the President's office and Individual Giving team.
  3.  Develops and enforces best practices for donor stewardship including the preparation of annual donor stewardship plans for identified donors and prospects, and with the Development Operations team, ensures updated and accurate donor information in Raiser's Edge.
  4.  Ensures consistent messaging for all Development communications including Annual Fund and Giving Society appeals in collaboration with the Individual Giving team and external direct marketing consultants.
  5.  Manages an annual calendar of stewardship activities and gift reporting across the organization; works closely with Development colleagues to provide appropriate planned and ad hoc donor recognition through publications such as impact reports, tailored personal high-touch emails, and digital and/or traditional mail channels.
  6.  With Development colleagues, develops solicitation messaging, and writes, edits and prepares, fundraising communications including solicitations, donor impact reports, gift acknowledgments, promotional materials, event briefings, VIP speaking points, social media content and web content.
  7.  Provides written communications expertise for constituent groups like the Boards of Trustees & Overseers and Women Working for Oceans (W2O).
  8.  Participates in donor prospect meetings and major gift stewardship discussions, alerting colleagues of upcoming stewardship activities that may impact them.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • Five+ years of writing experience in the non-profit sector, university advancement, foundations or alumni relations.
  • Experience working in development communications, donor relations, and/or donor stewardship strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong and persuasive writing, editing and storytelling skills. Can gather and synthesize information into easily understandable prose.
  • Experience in fundraising or foundation communications. Can prepare and support multi-channel
  • marketing communications plans for donor networks, including writing gift acknowledgments, event invitation text, brochures, web copy and digital/social media.
  • Demonstrated skills as a collaborative member in a team environment, who is also a self-starter with a desire to take on new challenges through creative problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and to work well under pressure.
  • Professional maturity, judgment and decisiveness to inspire confidence among peers, senior administration and leadership volunteers.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Raiser's Edge (or other fundraising database) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity, and possesses high standards of integrity and discretion.
  • A passion for the environment and for working as part of a team dedicated to protecting the vital and vibrant oceans is a must.
